From Recorder Music to the Bass Guitar

My parents had forced me to play the piano had a very early age. At the time, I hated the piano. However, ironically I would later learn to love playing the piano but it was birder to me as a child. I was never playing any songs that I really wanted to play and my teacher was really "forcing" the compositions on me and I just did not want to play it. However, I did like music as a child. In fact, I would only listen to soundtracks at the time and loved musical composition from people such as John Williams and Danny Elman. But piano wasn't cutting it for me and it wasn't until 4th grade that I found myself "hooked" on a musical instrument. This instrument was the recorder musical instrument.

Recorder Music

Learning Recorder Music in 4th grade

Now I know there are many people out there who remember learning recorder music in 4th grade and hating it. But for me, learning recorder sheet music was fun and eventually paved the way to me wanting to learn the bass guitar.

In my first day of 4th grade, my class met for out daily music lesson and the teacher handed us all each a free music recorder. This sparked my interest instantly and I already felt like I was going to enjoy playing the recorder musical instrument. The first song we leering was "Marry Had A Little Lamb". This was perfect recorder music for kids because it was very simple to learn and the finger arrangements were not complex at all and you really didn't have to more you finger arrangement around at all. IN fact, I picked this song up so fast, I can still remember my teacher saying "Everyone, follow him as he plays, he is doing it perfectly!"

My confidence as a musician

As a child, this encouragement really aided to my confidence as a musician (not sure if I could really call myself a musician at this point). But because of this statement, I had all the confidence I needed and thus wanted to go home and practice to strengthen my skills.

How to discipline myself to want to learn more about music

Because I enjoyed practicing so much, this really taught me how to discipline myself to want to learn more about music. In fact, from learning the proper way to practice, Later in life I would pick up the bass guitar and had no problem practicing that. In fact, when I stated out on the bass guitar, I already had my eye on a brand new bass guitar cabinet so I could get jamming.

The recorder musical instrument does not get much appreciation these days

I know the recorder musical instrument does not get much appreciation these days, but to me it was the staring point of my musical carrier. If I had not learned to play recorded music for kids as a child, I would never have gotten the confined and skills I needed to learn other musical instruments down the road. I really feel that learning the recorder as a child led me to play the bass guitar as an adult.

I too play the recorder. It was not my first instrument, but I have stuck with it for over thirty years, even composing music for it along with strings and piano.

My latest piece is simply entitled "Piece For Alto Recorder And String Ensemble." It is very much in the baroque style and I think I feel honored to have been the vessel God chose to compose this piece of music. For those of you interested in hearing the piece check out my facebook page. My name on facebook is Maestro Eddie C. McCloud. Let me know what you think. Also if any of you fellow musicians want to send me a friend request, I will be more than happy to accept.
